Welcome to ConneXion's

We have changed our format for our Newsletter, and in the interests of always tring to bring relevant material to our community and balancing that with an approach that is accessible but not overwhelming in its content we have begun to send out a smaller version of ConneXion's in the form of an eBulletin.

This site will host more extensive content that we cannot include in our brief eBulletins for members that are interested in accessing further resources, news, a calendar of upcoming events, and funding opportunities.

We continue to strive to improve our service and gladly accept any feedback on it.

Stay tuned as we continue to revamp this site, these pages, and our content.

NETWORK ANNOUNCEMENTS

NWNY ANNOUNCEMENTS

 (2.6.07)

1) FAMILY AND YOUTH SERVICES BUREAU FY08 PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENTS

All three Runaway and Homeless Youth Act funded programs are open for new competitions for Fiscal Year 2008 (Oct. 1,2007 through Sept. 30, 2008).  While the specific dates for notification of Requests for Proposals have not yet been determined, they are expected in the following order: Basic Center, February-March, Street Outreach March-April, and Transitional Living April-May. There will probably be two TLP announcements, the conventional one and another targeting pregnant and parenting teens.  Those agencies with TLP projects ending during the current fiscal year and those ending mid-2008 will be eligible to reapply.  Check grants.gov weekly or daily, or register for notification of the above announcements.

There is a strong emphasis on standardization throughout the Federal grants structure, so there may be some new or different features in these announcements.  Also note that there will be emphasis on safe exits and community service among outcome goals in these RFPs.  Also look into becoming a grant reviewer. Go to the website: www.hhs.gov/programs/grantreviews for information on how to apply.

NWNY will be offering specific workshops on each of the RFPs.  In addition to distribution of a writing guide (completed in conjunction with the other nine T & TA providers),  we will be hosting conferences with powerpoint presentations (webinars) along with individual consultation.  We will critique near final drafts of applications for current Network members as long as there is sufficient turn around time before submission deadlines.  We will also post frequently asked questions FAQs (along with FYSB responses) throughout the announcement period for each grant category.

Meanwhile, agencies expecting to submit proposals should already be thinking about the process of assembling a team or task force, checking into data and reference sites, and approaching their community for letters of support.  The Federal Census Bureau provides a huge range of statistics, as does the National Runaway Switchboard.  The US Dept. of Labor provides nearly daily updates and each state’s juvenile justice agency has summary information as well.

Our Network website will list a wide range of reference material and useful links in the very near future.

2) TRAINING EVENTS IN REGION 10 FOR THE COMING YEAR

Due to significant reorganization of the Regional Staff of the Family and Youth Services Bureau, planning for our training events is somewhat later than usual.  Each Region has been asked to hold their events in the city where their federal staff is located to reduce costs and to increase FYSB participation.  To help planning, the following dates, locations and themes have been determined:

Each event will have an optional tour of a local program and an evening presentation/networking event the first day followed by several workshops the second day.  All are planned for Thursdays and Fridays.

STREET OUTREACH          April 19th & 20th        Spokane, WA

Probable topics to include rural outreach, human trafficking, safety/boundaries for staff, reduction of exploitation, addressing survival sex issues.

BASIC CENTER         May 17th & 18th         Portland, OR

Probable topics to include service learning strategies, progressive case management/motivational interviewing, staff recruitment/retention strategies, RHYMIS reporting issues, safe exit strategies

TRANSITIONAL LIVING/INDEPENDENT LIVING   June 7 & 8th  Seattle

Probable topics to include service learning, RHYMIS reporting issues, safe exit improvements, aftercare responsibilities and strategies, community mentoring programs.

More information and registration procedures will be available on the website  www.nwny.org in the near future.

NEW MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Several new members are joining the Board of Trustees as a result of our recent elections.  The new Chair is Leslie Foltz of Bannock Youth Foundation in Pocatello, Idaho.  Leslie has been an Idaho representative to the Board for two terms.  She is their treatment/family coordinator and has served the agency in several capacities in her tenure with them.

The Vice Chair is also new to the position but not new to the Board.  Michelle Keating is currently Transitional Living Coordinator for YouthCare in Seattle.  Previously, she held several management positions with Friends of Youth and served as Board Secretary for two terms.

Our Representative the National Network for Youth Policy Council is Steve Olsen, program manager for Harry’s Mother, a division of Janus Youth Programs in Portland.  He has been in this position for two terms and has been very effective in National issues and concerns while representing our Region.

From Alaska, Gabe Duckworth of Residential Youth Care in Ketchikan was elected to a two year term.  His is their business manager and has been active in the Alaska Association of Homes for Children.  He joins Jorden Nigro, residential programs coordinator for Juneau Youth Services.  Also elected as Youth Representative for Alaska was Roy Omiak, a former client of Presbyterian Hospitality House in Fairbanks.  Roy participated in our Network youth event last Summer and really connected with our programs.

In Idaho, Charles Christianson of Intermountain Hospital in Boise replaced Leslie.  He is their Director of Business Development and joins Steve Fields, program manager for Hayes Shelter Home, a program of Idaho Youth Ranch.  The youth position was not resolved as part of the election, but Brandon Davis, a former client of Idaho Youth Ranch has been appointed to this position by their delegation.

Oregon has also noted several changes with Arnie Green, Executive Director of Community Works in Medford and Eric VanHouten, Transitional Living Coordinator for Looking Glass in Eugene, joining youth representative, Kris McAlister, (also of Eugene).  All have been active in Northwest Network and the National Network for Youth.

Replacing Michelle for Washington State is Jan Lecture of YouthDotCom in Colville.  She has participated in a number of Network events and trainings and coordinates a far reaching shelter program in rural Northeast Washington.  Also new is Wendy Tanner, Operations Manager for Community Youth Services in Olympia.  She has held several positions in the agency and will continue the long tradition of CYS representation on the Board.  Stephanie Taylor is the Youth Representative for Washington and as attended a number of community and state-wide events in behalf of the Network.  She is very active in the Seattle area youth community and is on several other boards.
